"Best area" lists usually name the same five famous neighbourhoods. But the best area for you is the one that gets you to work in a reasonable time, at a rent you can afford, with what you need within walking distance.
So this guide starts from where people work. Bangalore gets the most detail, because that is where Flatscanner checks listings today.

Within each area, the difference between two streets can be large: water supply, flooding in the monsoon, distance to the metro. Check the specific listing, not just the area.

Mumbai
Andheri East and Powai for the eastern suburbs' offices and startups, Vikhroli and Ghatkopar for more affordable rents with metro links, Thane for space at a lower rent if you can manage the commute.
Delhi NCR
Saket, Malviya Nagar and Lajpat Nagar in South Delhi; Gurgaon's Sector 56 and Golf Course Extension Road for Cyber City; Noida's Sectors 62 and 137 for the Noida offices. See our co-living guide for Delhi NCR.
Hyderabad
Gachibowli, Kondapur and Madhapur around HITEC City and the Financial District. KPHB for lower rents on the metro.
Chennai
OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road) for the IT corridor, Thiruvanmiyur and Adyar for a quieter, established neighbourhood.
How to choose between two areas
- Time the commute at the hour you will travel, not on a Sunday.
- Walk the last stretch from the metro or bus stop at night.
- Compare the rent for the same type of flat in both areas.
- Check the essentials within 1 km: grocery, pharmacy, gym, hospital.
- Ask about water and monsoon flooding on that street.
