Renting guide

A woman's guide to finding a safe flat and flatmates in Bangalore

Check the street at night, the last stretch from the metro, the building and the people. A practical checklist.

For a woman renting alone, the questions go beyond rent and commute: how the street feels at 10 pm, who else has a key, whether the owner will turn up unannounced. None of that is in a listing.

This guide covers how to check the area, the building and the people, and the paperwork that protects you.

Check the locality, especially after dark

  • Visit in the evening. A street that is busy at noon can be empty and dark at night. Check the street lights and whether shops stay open.
  • Walk the last stretch. From the nearest metro station or bus stop to the gate, at the time you would come home. This is where most people feel unsafe, not inside the building.
  • Look for life nearby: a 24-hour pharmacy, grocery stores, restaurants, other residential buildings.
  • Ask women who live there. Local groups for women flatmates in Bangalore are a good place to ask about a specific area.

A Flat Score shows the distance to the nearest metro and what is open within 1 km, which helps you shortlist before the evening visit.

Check the building and the flat

  • Entry: a guard at the gate or a locked main door, visitor approval, CCTV in the lobby.
  • Your door: a sturdy lock and a peephole or chain. Ask the owner to change the lock before you move in, and keep all the keys.
  • Windows and balconies on lower floors: grills and latches that work.
  • Who else has access: a caretaker, the owner, previous tenants. Ask.

Gated communities and managed buildings make most of this easier. Our gated community guide covers what to ask.

Flat, PG or co-living?

Women-only PG

Staff on site, food included, often strict timings. Good for your first months in the city.

Co-living

Many operators have women-only floors or buildings, with security and managed entry. Read the visitor rules.

Shared flat with women flatmates

More freedom and usually lower cost. Safety depends on the building and on the people you live with.

Your own flat

The most privacy. Prefer a gated community or a building where the owner or other families live.

Vet the owner and the flatmates

  • Meet potential flatmates in a public place first, and ask about their work, routines and guests.
  • Ask for a reference, like a previous flatmate or landlord, and actually call them.
  • Check the owner's ID and ownership proof before paying anything. See our documents checklist.
  • Agree visits in the agreement: the owner or caretaker comes only with notice, except in an emergency.
  • Do not share your full address publicly in group posts while you are still looking.

Avoid fake listings

Never pay token money before a visit, never pay into a personal UPI ID you were sent by a stranger, and be suspicious of an owner who is "out of town" and in a hurry. More in our post on rental scams.

After you move in

  • Save 112, India's emergency number, and the number of your local police station.
  • Share your new address and a contact for your flatmates with a family member or friend.
  • Get to know the guards and one or two neighbours.
  • Keep a copy of your agreement and the owner's ID on your phone.

Questions people ask

Which areas in Bangalore are safe for women living alone?

It depends more on the street and the building than on the area name. Prefer places close to a metro station or a main road, with a short, well-lit walk home, and visit in the evening before you decide.

Should the owner have a spare key?

It is common, but agree in writing that they will not enter without notice except in an emergency. Ask for the lock to be changed if previous tenants had keys.
